The Siren Dark Chemistry Book 1 eBook Meg Xuemei X

First of all, I'd really like to thank my new pal, Meg Xuemei, for allowing me to read her amazing book!! (As Lincoln once said, "My best friend is a person who will give me a book I've never read."). And, since I enjoyed it as much as I did, that makes me even more grateful for this opportunity!
Lucienne Lam, last of the Sirens, is on a desperate search to find the TimeDust before her enemies get a hold of her! If she fails in this mission, not only will it give her enemies (including her brother, how screwed up is that??) the chance to kill her but she'll never have the chance to be with her betrothed, Vladimir, who is an insanely hot, fierce warrior of a Czech Prince. Seriously, I love these two together. They balance each other out and I love the way they bicker and still look out for each other. Really, I love all the characters. They're all incredibly well written.
The only problem is that someone else has already located the TimeDust and its power is binding him to Lucienne. She must convince him to help her sever this bond so that she can be with Vlad.
Honestly, I loved this book. It's the first I've ever read by this particular author but I'm already looking forward to more, especially the next book in the series!!!

The Siren Dark Chemistry Book 1 eBook Meg Xuemei X Reviews

A new and different type of fantasy. I enjoyed finally hearing a good and exciting story sbout sirens. It was packed full of adventure, action, and romance. I will be reading more from this author.
This was a very enjoyable book with strong plot that had just the right amount of action, thrills and romance, well developed characters, and nicely done, and imaginative, world building. A fun ride and definitely recommended.
The nonstop action scenes immerse the reader along with the characters, taking me on a great ride! The romance in the book is also amazing. I’m cheering for both Vladimir and Ashburn and keep wondering who Lucienne will end up with.

Recommend it to the fans who want a fast-paced adventure that promises fun.
I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this book and new author. Don't normally read this genre, but decided to give it a shot. Very surprised at the detail and characters. They really came to life for me. The romance was touching and the heroes were spectacular! Left you wanting to read more of Megan Xuemei X's books.
Not great. Not super bad either, but not particularly good.

Here's my issue with it. It feels VERY much like it was written as a serial. The chapters are episodic and there is a certain amount of repetition that suggests plot recaps. Plus, since it is (or feels like it is) a serial, it doesn't actually end. Reading this was very much like watching a television show that you follow, but only catch every other show. You know the plot, but bits are missing that you just have to roll with. Characters showed up with no history or explanation, simply inserted in the plot. Characters who had existed suddenly have hobbies or habits that the reader is never told about until they are incorporated. Even the romance happens off page and feels like it's just been grabbed willy-nilly.

The whole 'it must be a serial' feeling is exacerbate by the fact that the book's blub isn't accurate to the events of this book. I can see how some of that might come up in the next, but it doesn't here. The book ends before it gets to, "She must convince him to sever this forced bond so she can return to her first love. But breaking the link seems insurmountable when the TimeDust launches its own ominous agenda and the two boys prepare to duel to the death over her." Nope, that doesn't happen IN THIS BOOK. Looks like the author chose at least one less episode for this volume and one or more for the next...or just doesn't know where the ongoing story split for the 'books.'

The result of all this is a group of characters I didn't feel I knew well, a romance I wasn't invested in, a plot that feels fragile and anchor-less and a book with little beginning and no end.

I also had serious trouble believing that these were teens. They spoke, had skills and acted much older. Even worse were the flashbacks when the main character was supposed to be a child. It was nowhere near believable, even for a genius. Plus, she was just too smug to like and too perfect at everything.

The writing itself is fine. But as a BOOK, with all the elements a reader expects in a BOOK, it's kind of a barely pass.
I don’t read much fantasy, but the luminous current of this one carried me away. Lucienne Lam enters the world with a fabulous destiny. Others see it almost from birth, and as she grows older, she deals with the Eye of Time, warrior monks, lost cities, and the killer giant Seraphen. She also falls into two hexed loves, one with Prince Vladimir and the other a dire attraction to the astonishing Ashburn.

The characters are full of sap, the plot abounds with surprises, and Meg Xuemei wastes no words. And like Updike, her jeweled prose brings the world alive. Though futuristic, this universe is more here-and-now than many “realistic” novels’. You hear the battles, feel the facial gestures, and get carried away by the soaring possibilities of love.

I hope THE SIREN finds an audience beyond fantasy. It is rich and brilliant, and people of all kinds will treasure it.
I couldn't get very far with this story although I wanted to like it. The characters were too flat and one dimensional. Resources just miraculously were available when needed, we were expected to like the protagonist in spite of her character flaws just because she was daring, and we kept being told about the protagonist's enemies without feeling that they were much of a threat. I got about 35% into the book and gave up.
